Forced labor camps (munkaszolgálat)

During World War II large number of Hungarian Jews in forced labor were treated by the Hungarian administration and army like slaves.

They were often extremely cruelly treated by the Hungarian army in slave labor camps and on the Soviet front.

Significant number of Jewish forced laborers died as a result.

Hungary does not take responsibility for its crimes against its Jewish and Gypsy citizens during World War II and the huge number of Hungarian men it sent as aggressors to Serbia, Romania, Soviet Union where many atrocities were committed.

Large number of Hungarian men in the attacking Hungarian army were also killed, many at Stalingrad.

Remnants of the army loyally fought with Nazi Germany in Hungary until the very last.

All that was left were grieving parents, widows and orphans and the army's many victims.

It was a very different army from the one which valiently fought for a just cause: a free and democratic Hungary in fall 1956.
